Testing viral TikTok recipes

Are these popular internet dishes worth the hype?

If you are on TikTok at all–or any social media platform–you have probably seen some of these viral recipes. Even though they are popular you might have wondered, are they tasty? Are they easy to make? Are they really worth making? So I tested seven of the most popular TikTok recipes to see if they are worth the hype. I rated them all on a scale of one to 10 based on how easy the recipe was to make, how the dish tasted, and overall if I think it’s worth making.

@cookingwithayehBaked Feta Pasta is def worth all the hype!! Inspired by the lovely @feelgoodfoodie 💗 #fyp #foodtiktok #bakedfeta #pasta #foryou #foryoupage♬ Taste It – Ikson

Baked Tomato Feta Pasta

This viral pasta got popular when someone shared a recipe that, they claimed, was the reason stores in Finland ran out of feta. Everyone tried this recipe, and it gained popularity when everyone noticed how easy and tasty it was (spoiler alert).

Ingredients:

1 block feta cheese

2 boxes of cherry or grape tomatoes

A big drizzle of  olive oil

Salt, to taste

Oregano, to taste

2-6 garlic cloves, peeled

1 box of your favorite pasta

Steps:

  1. Preheat the oven to 400°F. Cook pasta according to instructions on the box.
  2. Wash tomatoes, peel garlic cloves, and place into a 9×12 baking dish. Place the feta block in the center of the tomatoes. Drizzle olive oil over the tomatoes, sprinkle tomatoes and feta with salt and oregano.
  3. Place the pan in the oven uncovered and bake for 30 minutes.

    Jenna Kaufthal
  4. Take the pan out and let it rest for five minutes, then mash the feta with a fork and mix it with the tomatoes until it is creamy (don’t worry if there are some feta chunks left).
  5. Mix the sauce with the cooked pasta, garnish with basil, and enjoy!

Ease of recipe: 7. This recipe is pretty simple. I would say it’s a great choice for a weeknight dinner. This takes about 35-40 minutes and most of that is time for the sauce to bake. You could even prepare this at the beginning of the week and eat it throughout the week for convenience.

Taste: 9. This is a super tasty recipe. It’s definitely a solid pasta recipe to have on deck for any occasion. It tasted very creamy and salty and the tomatoes and herbs added lots of flavor, but still keeping it pretty basic and not too complex.

Was it worth it? Yes! This is a very easy recipe that is tasty and a great meal idea. If you are a pasta fan like me, definitely give this one a try.

Dalgona or “Fluffy” Coffee

This recipe blew up at the very beginning of quarantine, and everyone was trying to make this at home. The name dalgona is actually a type of Korean honeycomb dessert because of the similarity in looks between the two, both having a light brown color and fluffy texture.

@elieswayoftiktokThis is how I make coffee now thanks to tiktok :’) #coffee #fluffycoffee #trend #asmr #foryou♬ original sound – Elie

Ingredients:

2 tablespoons ground coffee

2 tablespoons sugar

2 tablespoons hot water

8 to 16 oz milk of your choice

Steps:

  1. Combine coffee, sugar and hot water in a bowl and beat them by hand or with an electric mixer high until the mixture is a light brown color and very fluffy and whipped. This could take anywhere from 2 to 10 minutes.
  2. Pour your milk of choice into a glass or mug.

    Jenna Kaufthal
  3.  Scoop the whipped coffee onto the milk. Feel free to top with a bit of demerara sugar. Enjoy this “drink” with a spoon.

Ease of recipe: 7. This recipe has few steps and few ingredients. However, it does take a little while to whip up, so just take that into account.

Taste: 8. This recipe is a super tasty and fun way to enjoy coffee. The mix of the bitter coffee with the sweet sugar and subte creaminess of the milk is superb.

Was it worth it? Yes! I have made this multiple times when I’m in the mood for a more unique coffee drink, and it’s a good recipe to have on hand for sprucing up your regular morning brew.

Peanut butter chocolate chip baked oats

Description: Baked oats recently became a very popular recipe due to the fact that they are relatively healthy and taste like a dessert that can be eaten for breakfast. People have tried many flavors, from blueberry to Ben and Jerry’s Half Baked, but this peanut butter chocolate seems to be the most common flavor.

Ingredients:

½ cup oats

½ banana

1 egg

1 tablespoon maple syrup

1 tablespoon peanut butter

¼ teaspoon baking powder

¼ cup milk of choice

¼ teaspoon vanilla extract

1 tablespoon chocolate chips

Steps:

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F.
  2. Place all ingredients–except for the chocolate chips–in a blender and blend until smooth.
  3. Stir in the chocolate chips

    Jenna Kaufthal
  4. Pour batter into an oven-safe bowl or ramekin and bake at 350 degrees for 20 minutes. Once it’s out of the oven, feel free to top with more chocolate chips and peanut butter.

Ease of recipe: 8. There really aren’t many steps to this and it takes a short amount of time. It’s pretty simple, and even if you aren’t a great cook you should be able to successfully make this recipe.

Taste: 9. This tastes like a banana chocolate chip cake. I would say if you want more of a peanut butter taste you should top the cake with more peanut butter. The texture is similar to a normal cake and it’s light and fluffy.

Was it worth it: Yes! This recipe doesn’t take long to make and is a small recipe as well, so it doesn’t make a lot of extra food, which is good. All around an easy and tasty recipe that could essentially be cake for breakfast.

Nature’s cereal

Description: This recipe was tested by everyone after Lizzo posted a video of her eating it and talking about how she couldn’t get enough of this fruit cereal.

@blk.waterNatures cereal… the hype is real 🙌 @lizzo #naturescereal #lizzo #lizzobeating #vegan #foodtiktok #blkwater♬ SUNNY DAY – Matteo Rossanese

Ingredients:

Coconut water

3-5 ice cubes

Equal amounts of various fruits. For example:

Pomegranate seeds

Blueberries

Strawberries

Raspberries

Blackberries

Steps:

  1. Wash, cut, and prep your fruit to your liking; place in a bowl.

    Jenna Kaufthal
  2.  Top the fruit with coconut water as if you were filling a cereal bowl with milk.
  3. Place ice cubes in the bowl. Stir and enjoy!

Ease of recipe: 9. This is very very simple and takes very little time. That said, for a bowl of wet fruit, it’s not as simple as just cutting fruit up.

Taste: 5. I don’t really get the hype around this recipe. It isn’t bad by any means, but it just tastes like cold fruit with a hint of coconut. I don’t know if it’s supposed to taste like something else or what makes it special (other than that Lizzo likes it).

Was it worth it? Maybe try it once. I would say it’s more fun and better than eating plain fruit, but it’s also more work and not necessarily worth the extra time. I don’t see it becoming a recipe I make regularly or one I recommend to others.

Cloud bread

Description: This recipe with very few ingredients became widely tested after people were fascinated by its  fluffy and jiggly texture.

@matthewinthekitchenTik Tok’s famous cloud bread is so easy to make! Recipe from @linqanaaa #fyp #cloudbread #baking #easyrecipe #bread #cooking #egg #easybaking #foodie♬ She Share Story (for Vlog) – 山口夕依

Ingredients:

3 egg whites

2½ tablespoons sugar

1 tablespoon cornstarch

Optional: Splash of vanilla extract and food coloring

Steps:

  1. Preheat the oven to 300°F. Separate egg yolks from whites and place whites in the bowl of an electric mixer (stand or hand mixer both work). Beat with the whisk attachment until frothy and foamy.
  2. Add the sugar, cornstarch, vanilla extract, and optional food coloring.
  3. Beat everything until stiff peaks form.

    Jenna Kaufthal
  4. Remove the mix from the bowl and place on a parchment-lined baking sheet.
  5. Form the mix into a shape of your choice.
  6. Bake for about 25 minutes, let cool, and enjoy!

Ease of recipe: 7. This recipe definitely isn’t difficult, but whipping the egg whites is not simple and requires extra equipment. However, there are also not many ingredients or many steps.

Taste: 4. To be transparent,  this recipe tasted a little weird. The texture is weird but cool. Its spongy and squishy but it’s not very appealing. The taste is pretty plain, it just tastes like sweet vanilla. I wouldn’t really consider this bread — I would describe it as a cross between a meringue and cotton candy, so if you like both of those this is right up your alley.

Was it worth it? No, because I wasn’t a fan of the taste, but it was fun to make, so if it intrigues you then give it a try.

Mini pancake cereal

@dailysageemini pancake cereal! what do you want to see next? #pancakecereal #foryou #quarantine #summer #viral #obx #bridgerton #pancakes #goodvibes #aesthetic♬ whats my name – “majesticmusic”

Ingredients:

Pancake mix of your choice and ingredients that are needed for the mix

Maple syrup

1 tablespoon butter

Optional fruit or chocolate chips

Steps:

  1. Prepare your pancake mix according to the box instructions (I used about a quarter of the box for about one serving, but it will vary from person to person and depending on the texture and box).
  2. Turn on your pan or griddle to a medium low heat.
  3. Place pancake batter in a  Ziplock bag, piping bag, or squeeze bottle. If you use a bag, cut the tip off one corner to create a small hole to  mimic a squeeze bottle.
  4. Squeeze the batter in  quarter-sized dots on your pan or griddle. Cook until bubbles form around the edge. Flip, or since the pancakes are so small and cook so fast, you can let them set and flip them all at once with your spatula.

    Jenna Kaufthal
  5. Put your mini pancakes into a bowl with toppings of your choice, such as maple syrup, butter, chocolate chips or fruit.

Ease of recipe: 5. Don’t be intimidated by this recipe.  It isn’t very hard  if you use pancake mix. However, it’s a little tedious to make so many tiny pancakes, and making multiple servings would probably take a lot more time.

Taste: 9. They’re pancakes, so I don’t really know what could be bad. This is super yummy and very fun in contrast to your standard flapjack.

Was it worth it? Yes! Even though it’s a little tedious, it still doesn’t take long and it is very tasty and super adorable.

Breakfast tortilla hack

@eman_inthekitchenBreakfast tortilla wrap #breakfastwrap #tortillawrap #foldedtortilla#YouShouldKnow #fyp #viral #yummy #foryourpage #tastyrecipe #kurdistan#ct♬ sonido original – m a y i t a

Ingredients:

1 tortilla (I used a bigger one so I could fill more)

Salt and pepper, to taste

Filling options:

(choose 4 fillings, one per quadrant of the tortilla. Feel free to create other combinations as well!)

Avocado

Hash browns

Eggs

Sausage (vegetarian or real)

Meat crumbles

Cheese (I recommend cheddar)

Tomato

Black beans

Spinach

Steps:

  1. Make a cut halfway through the tortilla (see picture above).
  2. Place your first topping of choice in one quarter of the tortilla then then second in the second quarter and so on, until you fill all four quarters.
  3. Fold the first quarter onto the second and the second onto the third quarter and the third onto the fourth until it’s all folded with your four layers of toppings.
    Jenna Kaufthal

  4. Heat pan or griddle to medium heat. Add oil, butter, or non-stick spray.
  5. Place the wrap in the pan and cook until one side is golden brown, and flip to the other side and cook until golden brown. If you’re using cheese, make sure it’s melted at this point.

Ease of recipe: 9. This recipe is customizable and the method of wrapping is pretty simple. Also, the fact that you can use so many different fillings makes it easy regardless of what ingredients you have at home.

Taste: 8. I only tried this recipe with the ingredients in the picture (hash browns, vegetarian meat, cheese and eggs). It was very tasty. I also topped it with avocado and hot sauce, which was really delicious .

Was it worth it? Yes! This recipe is a very good basic recipe that is easy to switch up so you don’t get bored. I could see this becoming a favorite breakfast or brunch recipe as it doesn’t take much time to make.
