On Purim day, students came into the lunch room in the morning to see the pool table replaced with a ping-pong table.
After years of use, the pool table was replaced by a ping-pong table, which is of better quality than the old pool table. Rav Justin Eichel, program coordinator, was the person who found the ping-pong table after looking for activities for Purim.
“Some students asked if I could keep it up, and I said yes,” said Eichel.
This transformed the ping-pong table from just an activity for Purim to a permanent activity for students to use during lunch.
NYHS junior Isaac Maimon said when he first saw the ping-pong table, he “thought it would be pretty fun.”
Freshman Adin Goldsmith says that nearly 20 people play ping-pong on any given day. That is nearly a third of the school.
The ping-pong table is more popular than the pool table is “because it gets me moving,” says Kiera Birk. “it makes me feel like Marty Supreme.” Marty Supreme is a fictional ping-pong prodigy based on legendary ping-pong player Marty Reisman.
The ping-pong table is used during the girls’ fitness elective, and it is also used in nearly every other fitness elective, according to Birk.
Goldsmith agrees. It was a “great decision by the school to switch the tables.”
