Students at NYHS wanted to attend the Seattle Seahawks Super Bowl Victory Parade in Seattle, on Wednesday February 12, 2026. The Seahawks won the Super Bowl for the first time in 12 years.
Students believed that the school wasn’t going to grant excused absences to all the students who were going to the parade.
“It’s incredibly frustrating that students are expected to care about school when we’re constantly told not to do anything enjoyable or memorable,” Moshe Turgeman, an NYHS junior, said in a Schoology post.
This is the Seahawks second Superbowl win. This is the first time that most students will have a clear memory of a win.
“I was three years old when they last won the Superbowl,” Sam Aaronson, an NYHS freshman, said.
Elon Brown, who recently joined NYHS, also commented on Schoology. “These events and times are very rare and meaningful and for many of us, this is the first time we are able to fully indulge in this experience.”
The same day, Principal Deirdre Schreiber responded to the posts on Schoology. “We are finalizing a communication to our community regarding the Seahawks parade and our policy as it will pertain to that,” said Schrieber. “Please keep an eye out for our communication later today.”
A couple hours later from the original Schoology post from Turgeman, Schreiber told NYHS students the admin’s decision.
“Regarding the parade, we trust that families will make the decision that best aligns with their values,” said the administration in the email. “Any student who plans to attend the parade must follow our standard absence procedures.”
There was an email from the NYHS administration office letting the parents know that it’s their decision if their kids go to the parade.
Most students were happy about the admin’s decision. Based on the school’s database, there were around 19 students that went to the parade, around a third of the student population at NYHS.
“Thank you to the school for approving our request to go to the parade. It is much appreciated.🙏🙏🙏🙏,” Turgeman posted on Schoology.
