On May 7, 2025, six golfers from the NYHS golf team went to the District tournament. One of the golfers qualified for the Tri-Districts but was later disqualified.
Benjamin Weichbrodt, the golf team captain and a senior at NYHS, was disqualified because he couldn’t attend the state tournament. This is because of an unofficial rule that “protects other players from people dropping out at the last minute or stealing spots when they won’t show up to State.”
It was his first time qualifying. Weichbrodt was disappointed and “a little blindsided.”
In an article by Layla Russ, at the beginning of the season, Weichbrodt expressed that his goal for this season was to qualify for State. But after deciding, Weichbrodt said, who [wouldn’t] choose Israel over a golf match.
In the District tournament, Weichbrodt tied for 11th in the boys’ individual standings. In the boys’ team, the team’s gross score was +109, which was higher than the others in the top four. Sadly, they didn’t qualify.
“I respect [Weichbrodt’s decision]. It’s just unfortunate that means he can’t play in the Tri-Districts,” stated Coach Steve Bunin, the NYHS athletic director.
