After a year hiatus, the golf team has returned to NYHS.
The 2025 season kicked off with the team’s first practice on Tuesday, March 11, and will conclude in late May with the state tournament. Coach Aaron Hanan, junior varsity basketball coach, is leading the co-ed team of nine, most of whom are new to NYHS golf.
“I’m really excited,” said senior Ben Weichbrodt. “I can’t wait to play, especially when the weather gets nice.”
“Golf can be a very frustrating sport,” said Hanan. He says that players will get discouraged over bad shots, and he can combat this by encouraging them to reset themselves and stay focused.
“The [golf] team dissolved,” said athletic director Steve Bunin in regards to last year’s lack of team. He cited the absence of commitment from the students. However, senior Ben Weichbrodt who tried to push for a team last year,
said there was a struggle with securing a coach. Both of these claims were confirmed by NYHS principal Deirdre Schreiber. This year, according to Bunin, Weichbrodt and and fellow senior Manny Spinoza helped spread the word about the team which ended with a team of nine.
This season, the team plans to aim high and attend the state tournament. Hanan’s goal is to have one player place in the district tournament, qualifying them for state. In addition, Hanan wants to have every player improve by ten shots, no matter what their skill level is.
Due to rocky athletic participation involving the golf team last year and girls’ volleyball and basketball this year, Bunin would like all players to complete the season and earn their varsity letter, meaning they receive a sports credit for completing the season.
“I’m mostly just excited for us to have the program flourishing again,” said Bunin.
